Coffee consumption and the risk of colorectal cancer

According to the latest research by T Naganuma and colleagues at the Tohoku university there is no statistically relationship between the consumption of coffee and colon cancer. The study was performed on a cohort group of Japanese people; over 22,000 men and 24,000 women aged between forty and sixty four took part in a habit survey twelve years ago.

It was found that 476 of the people in the survey had gone on to develop colorectal cancers.   The survey found no strong correlation between colon cancer and the consumption of coffee.  Men who were coffee consumers (3 cups or more per day) developed cancer at a rate 91% of the general population, whilst women developed cancers at 116%. Overall the trend was for a 5% reduction of colorectal cancer development in coffee drinkers when compared to the general population

Although the research, which have been published in the International Journal of Cancer suggest an inverse association between coffee consumption and cancer development, the results are inconclusive.
